Low Poo Without the Confusion
Share
Low Poo, No Poo, Co-Wash. Three terms, endless arguments online, and a client in your chair who read a forum post and now thinks shampoo is the enemy.
Here is the plain version, and what it means when you are standing in front of a shelf deciding what to buy.
What the terms mean
- Low Poo. Washing with shampoo that has no sulfates, no silicones, no mineral oil and no parabens. You still shampoo. You just use one whose ingredients rinse out without needing a harsh detergent to remove them.
- No Poo. No shampoo at all. Cleansing with conditioner or a cleansing cream.
- Co-Wash. The specific practice of washing with conditioner.
Low Poo is the one most curly clients want, and it is the one most of them get wrong, because they hear "no shampoo" and stop washing properly.
The logic, in one paragraph
Silicones make hair feel smooth and they build up. Removing that build-up takes a sulfate, which strips the natural oils curls need. So you wash to remove the thing you applied, and the washing damages the hair, so you apply more of the thing. That is the loop.
Low Poo breaks the loop by removing the silicone from the routine, which means you no longer need the harsh detergent.
That is the whole idea. Everything else is people arguing about edge cases.
Why the label check matters more here than anywhere
A shampoo can say "gentle" or "for curls" and still contain both a sulfate and a silicone. The front of the bottle is not the test.
Read the panel for these:
| Look for | What it is |
|---|---|
| Anything ending in -sulfate | The detergent. Sodium lauryl, sodium laureth |
| Anything ending in -cone or -xane | Silicone. Dimethicone, cyclopentasiloxane |
| Paraffinum liquidum, mineral oil | Mineral oil. Coats without feeding |
| Anything ending in -paraben | Preservative most Low Poo routines exclude |
A product that is genuinely built for this says so on the box, because the manufacturer knows the customer is checking.
The line we carry for it
The Brazilian Curly range is released for Low Poo and is free of sulfates, silicones, mineral oil and parabens. It is built for curls, waves and hair in transition.
- Brazilian Curly Shampoo 300ml, the wash that keeps the curl
- Brazilian Curly Mask 250ml, moisture that holds the pattern
- Brazilian Curly Spray 300ml, coconut water, jaborandi, ginger, guaraná, coffee and pomegranate
- The 4-piece kit, shampoo, conditioner, mask and combing cream
The spray is the one clients get attached to. Spray it, scrunch from the ends up, and the pattern pulls itself back into shape.
Hair in transition is its own case
A client growing out chemical straightening has two textures on one head, and the line where they meet is fragile. That is where breakage happens.
Low Poo helps because it stops adding stress to a strand that is already under it. Say to her what is true: the transition takes as long as it takes, the products make it more comfortable, and nothing shortens it except cutting.
Where Low Poo is the wrong answer
We would rather tell you this than sell you a routine that fails.
If she has heavy build-up from silicone products, hard water or pool chlorine, a Low Poo wash will not clear it, and hair that feels coated is not going to respond to anything you put on it next. Clear it first with an anti-residue wash, then start the routine clean.
That reset is a one-time step, not part of the routine. Our Kerawell Anti-Residue Shampoo 1L is built for it, and it is also the prep step before a chemical service.
The short version for the client
She does not need the vocabulary. She needs one sentence: use a shampoo without sulfates or silicones, and you will stop needing the harsh one.
The full range is in Shampoo & Conditioner and Leave-In & Styling.
