Keratin, Hair Botox or Nanoplastia: How to Pick in 2026

Three treatments, three different jobs, and a client in your chair who calls all of them "the Brazilian thing." Here is how to tell them apart and how to pick.

The short version: keratin smooths, hair botox repairs, nanoplastia does both and lasts longest. The long version is what decides whether your client walks out happy or comes back in three weeks asking why it fell.

Keratin: the smoothing one

Keratin treatments coat and seal the fiber. Frizz drops, the cuticle lies flat, and the hair gets easier to work with. What changed in 2026 is the goal. The industry moved from poker-straight to frizz control with natural movement, and glyoxylic acid formulas are the format driving that shift.

Pick keratin when the complaint is frizz and time. She wants her blowout to survive humidity and her morning to take ten minutes instead of forty.

Do not pick keratin when the hair is already fragile from bleach. Sealing damaged fiber does not repair it.

Hair botox: the repair one

Despite the name there is no botulinum toxin in it. It is a deep conditioning and reconstruction mask that fills gaps in the fiber with proteins and amino acids. Volume comes down as a side effect of the fiber getting denser, not because anything straightened it.

Pick hair botox when the hair is porous, dull and breaking. The client whose ends feel like straw. It also has a strong sub-category for blondes, where a toning botox neutralizes yellow while it repairs.

One honest note on the category. Some BTX formulas contain DMDM Hydantoin, a preservative that releases formaldehyde. Ventilate, wear gloves, and skip it on a client who has asked you to avoid formaldehyde releasers.

Nanoplastia: the long one

Nanoplastia went mainstream in US salons this year, and it is now offered in Los Angeles, Maryland and Florida among others. It uses nano-scale amino acids and organic acids to work inside the fiber rather than only on the surface.

Two numbers matter for booking. The session runs three to five hours, and the result holds four to six months. That is longer than a standard keratin, and it is why nanoplastia is being positioned above hair botox in longevity.

The mistake that costs you the rebook

Choosing by what the client asked for instead of by what the hair can take. She asks for the treatment her friend got. Her friend has virgin hair and she has three rounds of highlights.

Read the hair, name the gap out loud, and sell the step before the step. A client who leaves with repaired hair and a plan comes back. A client who leaves with sealed damage does not.

A note on formaldehyde and the law

The FDA proposed a rule banning formaldehyde and formaldehyde-releasing chemicals in hair smoothing products, then missed its December 2025 deadline. As of now there is no new date on the public record and no ban is in force. Anyone selling you product on the grounds that it is already illegal not to is telling you something that is not true.

What is true is that both the FDA and OSHA still publish active guidance on formaldehyde release from heated smoothing products, and that reading the ingredient list is on you.
